Oral health is one of the most important contributing factors to overall physical health. For this reason, Sugar River Animal Hospital places a strong emphasis on your pet’s oral health care. We conduct dental exams as a part of each pet’s annual physical, and based on our findings, may recommend professional, anesthetized dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar buildup and to restore your pet’s healthy mouth.
Professional Dentals and Periodontal Care
We perform all professional dental cleanings under anesthesia at Sugar River Animal Hospital. When a pet is anesthetized, we are able to perform the most thorough cleaning without causing them any stress. In order to ensure your pet’s safety, we conduct pre-anesthetic blood work and all of our anesthetized patients are fully monitored during their procedures.
Our professional cleanings include:
- Comprehensive oral exam
- Charting
- Full mouth x-rays
- Tartar and plaque removal
- Scaling
- Polishing
- Oral Surgery (when needed)
If Dr. MacLean discovers periodontal disease or tooth decay, we work closely with you to ensure that your pet receives the proper treatment. A strict at-home maintenance plan, as well as frequent professional dental checks, will often be required for pets who have been diagnosed with dental disease.
Oral Surgery
Our veterinary team at Sugar River Animal Hospital performs oral surgery services as well as traditional dental care. Some of the oral surgeries we are trained and equipped to provide include oral surgeries and the dental flap procedure for gum disease. We utilize complete surgical monitoring tools, as well as state-of-the-art dental surgical tools. Sugar River Animal Hospital is committed to providing the best for your pet and will be happy to answer all of your dental care questions.
At-Home Oral Maintenance for Pets
Exceptional dental care does not end when you leave our office. The veterinary team at Sugar River Animal Hospital recommends that oral care be continued all year round. Brushing your pet’s teeth is the recommended oral care option, and our veterinary technicians can always educate you on proper tooth brushing techniques. We know it is common for pets to dislike having their teeth brushed, and for these pets other options are available. We may also recommend water additives, sprays, gels, chew toys, or specially formulated dental diets for your pet. Please ask us today about your pet’s oral needs and we will help you choose the best option for your pet’s care.
