Dr. Joan Hiltz

Veterinarian

Hi, I'm Dr. Joan Hiltz, an Associate Veterinarian at Sugar River Animal Hospital! From a young age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the sciences. Veterinary medicine seemed like the perfect fit, thanks to my experiences owning and working with horses. This led to me earning my undergraduate degree at Villanova University before earning my Veterinary Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983.

After graduating, I co-owned a mixed animal practice in Northeast Pennsylvania for 25 years, where I gained extensive experience in both small and large animal medicine. I'm very involved in the veterinary community and am a proud member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), and the New Hampshire Veterinary Medical Association (NHVMA).

Why I Chose this Profession

I’ve always had a strong interest in the sciences, and combining that with my love for animals made veterinary medicine the perfect career choice for me.

Favorite Part of My Job

I am especially passionate about preventive care and educating pet owners on its importance. Client education and support are at the heart of my approach to veterinary medicine and are integral to keeping pets happy and healthy throughout their entire lifetime. I firmly believe that informed pet owners make the best decisions for their animals.

I also love working with a supportive team and having the opportunity to continue learning. I've been in the veterinary field for years, and despite all of this experience, there's always something new to learn. Veterinary medicine is always evolving, and I enjoy staying up to date with new advancements and techniques. In 2016 I undertook a new educational endeavor, earning a certification in Equine Veterinary Medical Manipulation (CVMMP) from the Integrative Veterinary Medical Institute.

Personal Hobbies & Interests

When I’m not working, I enjoy staying involved in equine endurance and competitive trail rides in the Northeast. I also love training and riding my young horse, as well as spending quality time with my family.
